What do FFL license types mean?

Dealer FFLs

Type 01 (Dealer): The most common license for commercial storefronts, gunsmiths, and home-based dealers. Allows the wholesale/retail sale of standard firearms and basic gunsmithing.

Type 02 (Pawnbroker): Specifically for pawn shops. Allows the lending of money with firearms taken as collateral.

Type 09 (Dealer in Destructive Devices): Allows the dealing of Destructive Devices (e.g., flashbangs, rocket launchers) and related large-bore items.

Manufacturer FFLs

Type 06 (Manufacturer of Ammunition): Strictly for producing and packaging ammunition (excludes armor-piercing or destructive device ammo).

Type 07 (Manufacturer of Firearms): Allows the manufacture of firearms, frames, and standard ammunition. (Many Type 07s also apply for an SOT to legally manufacture and sell NFA items like silencers.)

Type 10 (Manufacturer of Destructive Devices): Permits the manufacture of destructive devices, armor-piercing ammunition, and related components.

Importer FFLs

Type 08 (Importer): Allows the importation of standard firearms and ammunition from overseas markets.

Type 11 (Importer of Destructive Devices): Permits the importation of destructive devices and armor-piercing ammunition.

Collector FFLs

Type 03 (Collector of Curios and Relics): Also known as a C&R FFL. This is a personal license (not for commercial business). It allows enthusiasts to purchase and trade historical firearms and collectables (50+ years old) directly across state lines.
